Summary

The breif was to create a lively, fun and vibrant 80's style cafe in a garage/storage space in a Melbourne city lane way. The client mentioned they wanted a retro feel.

To create an 80's retro style theme I incorporated a retro colour scheme of teal, orange and grey wall colours to accompany the polished concrete floor. On the concept board I have included retro cafe furniture that could also be used to add a retro touch, an industrial/retro pendant light, a retro coloured print and spotlights to enhance the artwork.

I approach the tasks by researching the 80's and decided to stick to the retro style that I found. During the research I discovered that using LED lights would be a more energy efficient option.

The colour palette shown in the concept board is teal, oranges and grey with wood finishes and metal. I think this colour scheme will create a lively/fun feel to the cafe and still tie in with the cafes industrial surroundings. I think incorporating more retro colours such as bright pinks, oranges, and yellows into the table stationary and tying them in with the pendant lights, artworks and pot plants will harmonize them all together well.

Use of hire lights will ensure there is no safety hazards when installing the lighting and carrying out other tasks.

Exploration of Colour

Colour wheel example

Colour Scheme 1. - 80's Fashion

The blue, green, purple and yellow in this colour scheme are matched to the 80's fashion colours.
This analogous colour scheme resemble blue jeans and bright green, purple and yellow coloured tops worn during the 80's. This scheme could work as a blue low tonal value palette with pops of green, purple and yellow.

Colour Scheme 2. - Pastels

The pastels in this colour scheme are yellow, green, pink and blue. I have matched pastels that I found were popular during the 80's. These pastels are all additive colours that create a bright lively colour scheme.

Colour Scheme 3. Retro

The bright pink, teal, tangerine and yellow are all retro colours I matched from colour schemes I found during my research into the 80's interiors, fashion and art. These colours are all saturated colours.

Research into Compliance

Fire safety signs

  • Fire safety signs are used to show the location of fire extinguishers and fire hoses.
  • These signs are shown as white symbols and text on a red background.
  • Signs should be large enough to view without straining the eyes when communicating safety messages to employees and customers.
  • In order to comply with AS 1319:1994 you must consider the environment, lighting, and viewing distance - these factors will determine the size of the sign required to suit your application.
  • The recommended minimum sizes as per AS 1319:1994 are - Pictogram size is to be at least 15mm per meter of viewing distance - Text size upper case: 5mm per meter of viewing distance and lower case: 44mm per meter of viewing distance.

Size reference

Incorporating fire safety signs into the cafe design concept

I will ensure the fire safety signs are visible in each room of the cafe by following the size reference guide above and ensure that the interior colour choices do not impact the visibility of the safety signs.

Creative Investigation

Lighting from the 80's

Neon
I found out that neon lighting was popular in the 80's. It was used as signage on shop fronts, inside restaurants and as ceiling lights in residential interiors.

Colour schemes from the 80's

Retro
I discovered retro was a colour scheme in the 80's. They used saturated tertiary colours from pinks, reds, oranges, yellows, greens and blues.

Pastels

Pastels were very popular in the 80's. They were a mixture of soft pinks, greens, purples and blues. Pastels were used throughout interior spaces, in fashion and art.

80's Fashion
The fashion from the 80's was very bright and fun. The art work was also very bright and full of shapes and patterns.

Ways to add lighting and colour to open up small dark spaces
  • Light/bright colour schemes.
  • Use of lighter coloured furnishings.
  • Use of lighter finishes.
  • Use of pendant lights to light areas required.
  • Use of different types of lighting pendant lights, wall lights, table lamps, ceiling lights, floor lights, custom designed and concept lighting.
Smart choices for restaurant lighting
  • Avoid glare with correct positioning and type of lighting fixtures used.
  • Reduce electrical costs by use of LED lighting.
  • Measure 15 lumens per square foot for floor space and around 30 lumens per square foot for table space.
